Poor Momma's Pizza

I will admit, I'm a cheap momma. We rarely go out to eat and I'm always on the lookout for economical family meals (that my kids will ACTUALLY eat). As I was flipping through The Duggars: 20 and counting! (still excitedly, of course) I spotted this little pizza recipe. I thought it to be extremely clever and dare I say.... CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!! I usually prefer inexpensive, but cheap is definitely growing on me :) I made this recipe for my kiddies lunch yesterday. I made one per kid not knowing how much they would eat or if they would even eat them. They scarfed these babies down! Brad came in the house and Chase fed him a bite of his. I ended up having to make more for the kids and some for Brad's lunch too. Everyone really liked these. I love the fact these take less than 10 minutes from start to finish. These deserve a big A+!

POOR MOMMA'S PIZZA
sliced bread
spaghetti or pizza sauce (I made my own-the recipe is below)
shredded mozzarella cheese

Pre-heat oven to 450. Place bread on baking sheet. Top bread with sauce and spread to edges. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 5-10 minutes (it took 6 minutes in my oven). Enjoy :)

PIZZA SAUCE
1 can tomato sauce (8 oz)
1 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp basil
1/2 tsp garlic salt

Mix ingredients. IMPORTANT- let set 30 minutes to an hour. This makes the flavors combine and taste amazing.

In all my years I never thought of using bread. I usually make these with english muffins from the discount rack at the grocery store. I like the idea of using bread. Thanks for sharing!

I've done the "poor momma pizza" thing making quick pizza on english muffins before. There are times that you're just out of english muffins, but you always have bread!!! I'm cheap, cheap, cheap too - keep sharing your ideas!! :o)

Hey SITSta!

Hey, if everyone loved it, that's a thumbs up to keep on the menu!
I've just started using english muffins when I'm too lazy to make dough. =)

I am make little pizzas with cheap can biscuits. The kids love them. I am going to have to try your sauce recipe.
I used to make these with English Muffins, which I found at Aldi for about 39 cents a package at the time. My kids loved them! Some times, I used French bread slices, but I didn't think of using regular bread. They look yummy!

I remember back in the '70's that they came out with a special sauce to top bread with and make a pizza...I can't think of the name of it though...but...I've had many a bread slice topped with sauce and cheese as a teen! ;D

That's pretty neat!! Sliced bread instead of dough. Genious!!!

Genius!

And, a great use for stale bread! I get so tired of grilled cheese sandwiches. :)

I like the recipe but I can buy tomato sauce with oregano, basil and garlic already in it, so is it the same I wonder? Quick bread pizza was always an afterschool snack favorite when I was a kid. We did pizza quick sauce though not homemade. Stopping by from SITS.

Oh my goodness! I used to make these back in college! I'd forgotten all about them. So yummy!

What a fun easy idea to do for lunch! I'm always looking for easy lunch ideas that are different for the kids. They sometimes get tired of PB&J.

Happy SITS!
You know I make these from time to time for my kids, but I never thought of cutting them into the tiny pieces (or letting it set for 30 mins - they usually just scarf them down!)

I always have leftover spaghetti sauce. Definately agreat left over idea for me!

Well, gosh, I never thought of that - I mean, I've made English muffin pizza, but I never thought of bread! We are so going to try that for lunch this weekend!
My sister in law served these and showed me how to do them. I made them quite a few times and it always went down well and like you say cheap is good in this case.

Enjoy your SITS Day in the spotlight.

Great idea! Makes me re-evaluate what I can use from the pantry in a pinch. Congrats on your SITS day!
Sounds good--I like things that don't take much time! Still, I think just heating up yesterday's pizza in the microwave is more my speed. I am not a cook and don't even have a stove.

I am including a link to your blog though in my Sunday's post, "What's In Your Crockpot?" at www.zemeks.blogspot.com. This is the best cooking blog I've come across!
My roommates and I use to make these! I will have to try them at my house!

I wish I'd had thought of this when my kids were little. How simple and you are right...CHEAP:) You could even add bacon bits or pepperoni as a quick topping.
I'll give it a go sometime...looks like something hubby would dig.

I am all over this!!!

{ps. when I make my own sauce, I food process carrots and spinach and throw them in, the red hides them really well {and they don't change the flavor}so they don't know that they are getting extra veggies}

Happy SITS day!

This is so easy and looks pretty good. It could even be made "lean" by using whole wheat bread and reduced-fat cheese. I know my husband will like this one! Thanks!
Haha! I thought I was the only one who made these! Glad to know I'm not alone!!
Cute blog! Yummy recipes!
Happy SITS day!
My little sister makes these and loves them! I always just thought it was weird, but maybe I should give it a try...

Happy SITS Day!
Now there's a clever recipe...it's simple and easy and I bet my girls would LOVE it!

Thanks for sharing!

Ha! I knew I was not the only one who made these! ;0) My hubby thinks I'm nuts!
We've always used english muffins and my kids love them... but I don't make them often because we never have pizza sauce lying around... but we always have tomato sauce, so I am really excited to try your recipe!

Another inexpensive meal that the kiddos LOVE is making your own pig-in-a-blanket. Just roll hotdogs in a crescent roll (Pillsbury or storebrand both work well) and bake until golden brown. The kids like to MAKE them and EAT them! :)

BTW - Happy SITS day.

Yummy! I haven't had pizza toast in such a long time.

Happy SITS day! :)
I had a poor momma! She made these all the time for my dad as a snack when he got home from work on 2nd shift. :-)

Brings back memories! And they WERE good!

Super great idea!! Cut it into little triangles and my little one wouldn't even know the difference :o)!!

Kudos for slicing it like a pizza--that's what "makes" it. AND, mixing your own sauce, those bottled ones just aren't that great.

I've seen the english muffin ones as well but never bread. That's a great idea. We always have some Texas Toast around for french toast so I think that would make a great "deep dish" type pizza!
We've made this pizza so many times. Fun, fun for little children to help create.

Once again, Happy SITS day.

I ate this growing up! Have not thought about that in years. I am not a pizza fan, but for some reason I loved this treat. Thanks for reminding me, I may try it out this weekend for old times sake!

Growing up, my dad was the one in my family that inspired the notion that you can make virtually anything into a pizza. We had pizzas on pitas, english muffins, toast, ritz crackers...Fond memories. Your humble pizzas may very well inspire fond lifelong memories in your children. Okay, I saw the thumbnail of the Spaghetti Tacos. Has someone been watching iCarly? I've gotta go check out that post...

I sometimes make these for my kids but I usually use an english muffin but I can see a simple piece of bread would work just as well, esp after cutting it "pizza style". Very clever!

We used to do this with hoggie buns growing up--- I had no idea we were poor. LOL- just kidding. It was my all time favorite meal because we put our own together-- it was great! I need to do that with my kids one of these days.

we've done something similar like that in our house too. It's amazing how much better it tastes than those premade mini pizzas.

I absolutely love your ideas. I'm always looking for inexpensive meal ideas that are kid approved. So many of those cookbooks for kids are full of things that my children refuse to eat.

Happy SITS day.

I made something like this a few months ago and my family loved it.

I use caned biscuits, peperoni, spaghetti sauce, and shredded cheese placed on pan like mini pizzas and cooked to biscuit directions.

Oh so yummy and cheap.
reminds me of PizzaQuick, pizza sauce that used to come in a jar. You would spread it on english muffins, add a little cheese and toast. I loved that stuff!

So I totally love this idea! I had a loaf of 9-grain bread that either needed to be used or frozen, so on my way home tonight I picked up some pizza sauce and mozzarella, and it was fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

Hah, they actually sell these in most bakerys in England (where I'm from originally). Usually they have a slice of tomato on top.

I found your blog yesterday and love it. I've been reading back through all your posts and making notes of all the great recipes to try. I will definitely be following!
