Sloppy Joe Calzone

My kids and husband really enjoy sloppy joes, so when I saw this in my new issue of Simple & Delicious magazine I knew I had try it out. Brad usually cringes when he sees the new issue in the mail. He knows I will be trying all sorts of new recipes out on him and he doesn't always appreciate it. What a silly man. He would be happy if I fixed sandwiches every night. Well,
Brad wasn't complaining about these calzones. Everyone really enjoyed them. I love the way the crescent rolls get nice and flaky and crunchy. The black beans are a nice addition to the filling. This meal was such a steal coming in at under $1.50 per serving. Enjoy :)

SLOPPY JOE CALZONE
1 pound ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green pepper
1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tubes (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent rolls
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese

In a large skillet, cook the beef, onion and pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the beans, tomato paste, water, ketchup, oregano and salt. Separate crescent dough into six rectangles; seal perforations. Spoon a fourth of the meat mixture onto half of each rectangle; sprinkle with cheese. Fold dough over filling; pinch edges to seal. Cut slits in tops. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375° for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown.

When I first started trying new recipes all the time my husband loved all the variety, but now he's the same way as yours just wanting an old favorite once in a while. This one looks really good!

This is a terrific way to make calzone's. I've never made them because I always thought they looked to difficult. I know I could do this! Thanks for the great idea!

Love crescent rolls, they have so many uses. Any food my kids can pick up with their hands works for them.
What a great idea. My girls would love these!

This sounds great; I love a new twist on an old standby. What is it with men and sandwiches? And frozen pizza? They could live on those two things alone! LOL

This looks really good. I had to e-mail them and let the magazine know that I haven't gotten my new magazine yet. There was a screw up with my mail (can't skip 2 days picking up mail or they think you moved).

Would you believe that in the 8 yrs my husband and I have been together, I don't think I've ever made sloppy joes?!? How sad is that?!? I don't really recall my Mom making them while we were growing up, but I'm fairly confident that everyone would love them...especially this recipe!
This is a delicous looking idea, Heidi. My family will love these.

OH my gosh, this is a great idea! I'd use turkey but keep everything else the same. Yum!
My husband LOVES sloppy joes also! I really like the idea of adding the beans also.

Mmm. I've been thinking about calzones lately. This looks and sounds totally delicious. My husband used to be the same way. He grew up on fast food and mac n cheese. I keep working on him and he's starting to come over to the other side. A "foodie" by no means, and we still disagree (he thinks powdered eggs on a breakfast buffet and pre-packaged gravy are the best thing ever), but at least he tries and likes most everything I make these days (as long as it's not fish)
Mu husband would LOVE these! This is totally his kind of meal! :)

I'd like to try this recipe immediately! My mom used to make something like it when I was a kid, but she lost the recipe years ago. I've been searching for it, or something really close to it to make for my kids. Thanks!!
