Ice Cream in a Bag

Do you want yummy homemade ice cream in only 5 minutes? Well, you're in the right place. I absolutely love the flavor of homemade ice cream, but hate dragging the ice cream freezer out. Here's the perfect solution. I came across this wonderful recipe at the Recipe Shoebox. I made one batch following Lara's directions and another using skim milk and Splenda. They both turned out so good I give them a big A+ :) My kids had a blast tossing the baggie back and forth dancing and shaking around. Who knew having fun could taste so good!

Makayla got her glasses today. Doesn't she look cute?

ICE CREAM IN A BAG
1 cup half and half (or skim milk)
2 TBSP sugar (or Splenda)
1/2 tsp. vanilla
ice
rock salt
quart size ziploc bags
gallon size ziploc bags

Pour half and half, sugar, and vanilla into quart size ziploc bag. Seal. Meanwhile place 4-6 cups ice and 1/2 cup rock salt into the gallon size bag. Place sealed half and half mixture into the bag filled with ice and salt. Seal. Toss, knead, wiggle, and whatever else you can think to keep the bags in motion for about 5 minutes (use oven mits to keep fingers from getting too frosty). Half and half mixture will thicken into ice cream consistency after about five minutes. Remove from bag, add desired toppings, and serve immediately.

What a fun, fun, fun idea. I am so with you on not wanting to haul out the whole ice cream machine--that was fun for about one go of it after we got ours :-). I will for sure try this!

We did these for Kat's 5th birthday party last summer. Kids and adults alike made there own ice cream to go with the cake. It was a lot of fun.

I didn't even think of trying it with skim milk, but that gives me all the more incentive of letting my kids make it more often now! I'm glad your kids had fun! :)

I'm probably one of the few people out there who doesn't own an ice cream maker, so I am quite excited to try this recipe!!! I love homemade ice cream, but have only been able to eat it at my sister, Sarah's house!

I don't own an ice cream maker so this recipe is intriguing. I enlarged the picture so I could see each delicious creamy bit of ice cream!
