"The Best" Applesauce

My favorite season's fast approaching. I love Autumn. Don't you just love the smell you get when the leaves are starting to fall and it rains? Mmmm... I can almost smell it :) Applesauce's one of my favorite fall recipes. I know you can make it any time of the year, but it tastes better with fresh, in-season apples. Last year our neighbors tree was packed with outstanding tasting apples. I used this recipe to make the best applesauce I'd ever eaten... along with delicious apple crisp (I will be sharing the recipe soon). Unfortunately, the apple tree did terrible this year (I think it was because our summer was much wetter and milder than normal). I only saw a few apples on the entire tree, so no picking apples for me this year. I was craving this applesauce and bought a bag at the grocery store... and you know what? The applesauce turned out as delicious as I remember! Everyone in my family (even Picky Pants) gets excited about eating this applesauce. It's definitely a "must try". Enjoy :)

Here's Sophie last night at the PTO meeting. It's a tradition for the Kindergartners to say the pledge at the first meeting. I think she may already be a little bit boy crazy!

"THE BEST" APPLESAUCE
4 apples - peeled, cored and chopped
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup white sugar (I use Splenda)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

In a saucepan, combine apples, water, sugar, and cinnamon. Cover, and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until apples are soft. Allow to cool, then mash with a fork or potato masher if you want chunky sauce, or put in the blender (I use my magic bullet) for a smooth sauce.

I had no idea you cooked apples for applesauce.

Glad I stopped by from SITS! I'm always looking for a good recipe. My recipe book is very limited so I'm looking forward to adding some of yours to my list. Thanks!

Great minds think alike, Heidi! I was just thinking of making some applesauce with my excess apples! Have you ever tried adding just a touch of maple syrup? It's wonderful!

Yummmy homemade apple sauce. It's one of those recipes I never stop to think about and I should as we generally have apples here in the house. Can't tell you have many times I've tossed out apples that weren't good enough for dessert but would have been perfect for sauce! Thank you soooo much for this post! I'm going to go and make applesauce now.

mmm, i love homemade applesauce!
I loved when my mom would cook up a batch of chunky applesauce for my sisters and me. Sometimes, instead of cinnamon, she'd throw in a few of those red hot candies! :-) Gave the cinnamon flavor with a pretty pink color...we loved it! :-)

Homemade applesauce always makes me think of my Grandma who I'm really close to! I definitely need to try making it...I know my kids (especially my daughter) would LOVE it! My goal, now that my son started preschool (and once I can get caught up with everything I've been slacking on for MONTHS), is to start making more "natural" snacks--I really can't stand thinking about all of the nasty preservatives that must go into all of these snacks that are targeted toward kids!
