Taco Seasoning

A few days ago I made tacos only to realize after setting all the fixings on the table and browning the ground beef I had NO taco seasoning! I'm the official mayor of taco-ville and I was out of taco seasoning... can you believe it? Then I remembered I had jotted down a taco seasoning recipe. I've never used it because I'm always prepared. Anyone who makes as many taco-ish recipes as I do automatically puts the seasoning in the grocery cart. Well, am I glad I didn't remember. This homemade seasoning's great! It's very inexpensive and I already had all the spices to make it. I hope you will try this next time the taco urge hits you! Enjoy :)

TACO SEASONING
1 TBSP chili powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (I left out because of the kids)
1/4 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp paprika
1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp black pepper

In a small bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper. Store in an airtight container.

I have been making my own taco seasoning for a few years since my husband has an intolerance to MSG and most of the pre-packaged ones contain it. There is just something about being able to tweak the recipe as warranted that also appeals to me.

Right now I have a giant, economy sized jar of taco seasoning from Sam's Club, but I do make my own sometimes. Your recipe intrigues me with the added oregano. I've never used it in taco seasoning before, but I'll be it's a nice addition!

I am copying this down RIGHT NOW! I can't tell you how many times I have done this! I usually have all these seasonings just hanging around, too.

You are a lifesaver, Heidi! There have been several times that I've wanted to make something quick like tacos for dinner and realized at the last minute that I didn't have any taco seasoning. This will be a great recipe to have on hand!!! Plus, it's nice to know exactly what I'm eating :)

I use a lot of taco seasoning too and just did this last week when I ran out of taco seasoning! I read the back of my empty jar and then added guesstimated amts. of the ingredients to create my own. Now I have a recipe! Thanks, Heidi!

What a neat idea. I have to make this, we eat tacos here a couple times a month.
This is a great recipe to have on hand... thanks, Heidi! :)

I've used this recipe for years and it IS good, I agree. I put the spices into the cooked meat and add 1/2 cup of water to thoroughly dissolve and distribute the spices. I then cook it until the liquid has evaporated. YUM.

Excellent money saving and DELCIOUS idea. I have a large jar of taco seasoning, but will do this from now on as I typically have the ingredients on hand. Gads, I'm paying double or more the price when I could do it for almost next to nothing (in comparison) at home.
I make my own too. My recipe calls for bouillon and cornstarch (the cornstarch thickens the meat mixture a bit). I use the sodium-free beef bouillon granules and I leave out the salt the recipe calls for. I just add salt when I brown the beef. I can control the salt better than way.

Being almost as much of a taco queen as you, this will prove to be a most invaluable recipe to have.

I started making my own when I found out how much sugar and salt is in the premix. Might just have to give yours a try too:)

I found a recipe for taco seasoning almost ten years ago. I made it, we ate, and I never looked back. I haven't bought a single packet of seasoning since then! What I do now is make about 5 or 6 servings of this (use individual dishes) and then put each one into zipper sandwich bags. I roll up and seal the bags then wrap them all in foil and put them in the kitchen cabinet. That way I don't have to measure everything out every single time I want tacos :)

YES! Thank you! I'm the opposite and don't often make tacos but when I do get an urge to make something taco-ish. I never have the seasoning.
