Every time I buy buns I always seem to end up throwing a few away. A few nights ago Brad grilled hot dogs. We had some buns leftover I knew I would end up trashing because although they aren't moldy or completely stale, they're past the point of being fresh and I didn't buy anything to use with the hot dog buns for this weeks menu. I forgot to buy garlic bread and saw the sad little buns setting on the counter and said, hmmm. I turned the oven on, slathered them butter and sprinkled them with a garlic powder, mozzarella, salt, pepper, parsley, oregano and basil concoction. I browned them and they were a hit. Everyone really liked these and I feel good not wasting any money by throwing the unused, less than fresh buns away!
CHEESY GARLIC BUNS
leftover buns ( I used 3 hot dog buns)
butter
shredded mozzarella cheese (about 1/4- 1/2 cup)
garlic powder (about 1 tsp)
salt (about 1/4 tsp)
pepper (about 1/8 tsp)
parsley (about 1 tsp)
oregano (about 1/8 tsp)
basil (about 1/8 tsp)
Preheat oven to 400. Lightly spray cookie sheet. Open buns and place crusty side down. Spread butter onto flat side of bread. Mix cheese, garlic powder, salt, pepper, parsley, oregano and basil. Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking. Sprinkle cheese mixture onto buttered surface of buns. Bake until golden brown (about 10 minutes).

I've seen that leftover old-fashioned donuts used in the similar manner.
Money is tight in our house, too, so it's good to see these ideas.
