The Peachy Chicken Flop

Taste of Home... you failed me!!! For 10 years I've drooled over your food. I've received stacks of favorite recipes from you and then I made this one. Wait. How silly do I sound. Taste of Home... I STILL love you. You've only steered me wrong one time in all these years. I should be thanking you :) This was the first recipe I attempted with a fruit/meat combination. I've swiftly flipped past these recipes for years thinking they sounded to fancy for my blood. TOH keeps publishing them, so I decided to give it a try. I learned one important lesson. My family enjoys fruit and meat, just not together! I wanted to love it. The people who reviewed it on the Taste of Home website loved it. If you enjoy the fruit/meat combo you may love it. I debated on whether or not to post this one, but I always enjoy seeing what flopped on other peoples sites. I'm not a perfect cook. I love trying new recipes, but you have to realize there will be a few flops when trying to discover new favorites. Enjoy... we didn't, but you might :)

*I thought back and realized I lied... well kind of! I do enjoy apricot preserves in recipes like Mustard-Apricot Pork Chops and Firecracker Shrimp.... I wasn't even thinking about those recipes when I wrote my post. While I had made and enjoyed recipes with a meat/preserves combo I had never made any with chunks of fruit*

Here's what was cooking 1 year ago:

Peanut Butter Chewies

These recipes are both tried-and-true favorites and by far the most made recipes on the site. I can count on the BBQ beef burgers being tender and flavorful. The peanut butter chewies always hit the spot. It only seems fitting to mention both these recipes are from a Taste of Home publication :)

PEACHY CHICKEN
4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (4 ounces each)
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 tablespoon butter
1 can (15-1/4 ounces) sliced peaches, undrained
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
1 envelope onion soup mix
Hot cooked rice, optional

In a large skillet over medium heat, brown chicken in oil and butter; remove and keep warm. Stir in the peaches with juice, brown sugar, orange juice and soup mix to the skillet. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Reduce heat; return chicken to the pan. Simmer, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until a thermometer reads 170°. Serve over rice if desired.

O, I just hate it when this happens. It usually happens to me when I am to take a dish somewhere. Most of the time, it is good...other recipes fail me, too.
I do like fruit, sweet and meat all together. Hubby does NOT. Guess I won't try this one.
Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one. :)

Heidi, I would have seen that and definitely tried it. I still think I might as I have all the ingredients for it. Love fruit and meat together, especially chicken. I'm making a different chix recipe for dinner but will certainly keep this in mind; I have frozen peaches and didn't know what to do with them. Will be trying this one. Sorry it didn't work out for you :(

What a shame it didn't taste good, it looks so pretty!

I'm sort of on the fence about the fruit/meat combinations. Some look good, some just sound way to sweet for my taste.

I'm not really a fruit/meat girl, either. I can handle meat/sweet in only one way: breakfast sausage or bacon with syrup!

I'm the same way. There isn't much fruit and meat combo I can eat. I just can't make them work together.

Oh that feeling...when you take time to try a new recipe that sounds so good, and then it becomes a total waste! (:

I don't make fruit/meat combos all the time, but when I do, I like this one: http://myfavoriterecipes-rejoice.blogspot.com/2009/04/apricot-glazed-chicken.html

It's super easy, the fruit is mostly in the stuffing. Then again, if you don't like the combo, that's fine... Thanks for the fun post!

Bummer, I see recipes like that too and wanna try but to nervous, especially peaches. Thanks for the heads up on it.

I don't mind pineapple with ham or pork, or maybe a fruit glaze on meat (cranberry on meatballs, apricot on chicken), but I don't think I would have liked this dish either. I also don't like cinnamon with meat, like in some Greek recipes. I associate cinnamon too strongly with sweet foods.

I was just thinking it sounds like a combo that might have been better with pork. It's lovely to look at anyway :)

Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest!

Now I'm hungry after seeing your pictures and I've had more than enough to eat today! LOL

I'll be participating in a new blog with 5 other women that you might want to check out...
www.fromblahtota-daa.blogspot.com where we will be cooking up some yummy stuff!
Oh, you don't know how this has me chuckling. I made a lemon chicken dish from TOH this past week and it was terrible! Funny to have had the same experience! Here's to better luck for us in the future!
Have a great day, Hiedi!

PS...my husband asked me to please not try anything new again, unless it was good.....(like I'm not always planning on it being good!)

Thats too bad. I'm guessing that the orange flavor overpowered the peach? I'd have to play with this one a little. Thanks for the honest review.

Thanks for your comment on my blog! You must be laughing that I am trying a recipe you hated :) I am a huge sucker for the fruit meat combo - I'll let you know if it's a fail in our house too!

Heidi!! You ought to write a book you are so good with words ! And you are a wonderful cook! I miss your tasty treats!
Oh Heidi, you are so funny!! I like some fruit together too, but don't think I've ever actually combined these two either - not that I can remember. I wonder if the peaches were pureed if it would make a difference? Isn't that funny how some people will rave about a recipe and then you try it and, um, not so much?!

At least you were adventurous enough to try it; we don't do the meat/fruit thing in our house. :)

Hmmm yeah I'm not sure about that one either ... LOL.

I do love the cranberry pork chops I posted a while back. Also Apples and pork have been a hit.

The others tried and true recipes of course look marvelous as always :)

I'm kinda like you Heidi. I like jams and perserves in my savory food but am not crazy about chunks of fruit. I think for me though it has a lot to do with the texture as I'm not overly fond of warm mushy fruit in baked goods either. On the other hand my kiddos are.
