The Rice on the Grill Flop

I had high hopes for this recipe. I thought a quick side dish you could put on the grill with whatever meat you're cooking would be so easy... and it was. Only, it tasted HORRIBLE!!! I'm not a picky eater and will eat yucky things sometimes because I don't want to waste food (a lovely trait from my mom). I knew it was wretched when I couldn't even eat it! It looked good. I liked all the ingredients, but the smell and taste were icky. I think the ketchup was the stinker and gave it a bad, tangy taste. The recipe has great potential and I'm willing to try again, but this time I will use tomato sauce.

RICE ON THE GRILL
1-1/3 cups uncooked instant rice
1/3 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/3 cup ketchup
1 TBSP butter

In a 9-in. round disposable foil pan, combine the first seven ingredients. Dot with butter. Cover with heavy-duty foil; seal edges tightly. Grill, covered, over medium heat for 12-15 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Remove foil carefully to allow steam to escape. Fluff with a fork.

Would it be worth trying again with tomato paste/sauce instead of ketchup?

Hah, I need to learn how to read! You said you'd try it again with tomato sauce... sorry *L*

This does sound yummy! I think I may try this next time I grill out, WITH tomato sauce. :)

It does look nice! Sometimes its hard to know if ketchup is going to be a good thing or a bad thing.

It looks yummy. Let us know what it goes the 2nd time around with the sauce.

You sure it wasn't the combo of tomato+foil+heat that did it? Just something that popped into my head... Whenever you have anything tomato-y canned in tin cans, they line it with something to keep the tomatoes from reacting in the can.

I don't think I've ever done rice on the grill before and you KNOW how much I cook on the grill, so props to you for even trying. Was the off taste acrid, like burnt sugars? Maybe the grill heat was too hot? Just throwing out ideas.

... it had a weird sweet tanginess. It was almost like something in the ketchup and the chicken broth clashed. It was a flavor I don't wish to repeat. I'll let you know if the tomato sauce fixes the problem!

I definitely like the idea of this. If I could make the sides on the grill too, then I wouldn't even need to mess up the kitchen when we're grilling out. I could just hang on the deck with my husband and the kids. Sounds perfect!

If you get this right, you've gotta let us know : )

It certainly looks nice, I would hazard a guess I would eat the lot. lol.

But worth varying recipe so it suits your particular tastes, that is the beauty of cooking :)
Sad that it doesn't taste good! I always hate disappointments, although my husband is pretty good at eating them anyway. Hope it comes out better next time!
